AFP Maryland Chapter's Diversity Plan 2012 - 2013

In order to fully realize our mission and vision, the AFP Maryland Chapter is committed to actively fostering diversity and inclusion throughout its programming, membership and operational efforts by working to achieve the following goals and objectives:

Goal 1:  AFP Maryland will provide scholarship support to a member of an under-represented group to help increase diversity within its membership

  • Promote (via direct mail, face-to-face and email) AFP scholarship information to diverse populations.
  • Contact lapsed members of under-represented groups concerning availability of member scholarships
  • Encourage under-represented groups or individual members to join the AFP Maryland diversity or other identified committees to increase awareness

Goal 2:  AFP Maryland Diversity Committee will co-host a minimum of one (1) fundraising program each year that is geared toward educating its members about the importance of diversity (i.e., diversifying your funding, building mutually rewarding relationships, fostering collaboration, working with diverse populations, etc.)

  • Work with AFP Maryland Board of Directors, diversity chair and community partners to identify a program topic of interest
  • Create marketing materials that highlight program topic and the importance of diversity in fundraising
  • Distribute program information to AFP-MD members and non-members encouraging participation of a diverse population
  • Ensure that program fees are cost effective and feasible so members of under-represented groups can attend
  • Evaluate program effectiveness based on feedback from attendees and evaluation forms

Goal 3:  Incorporate a diversity topic in each of AFP Maryland monthly roundtables (major gifts, small shop, annual giving, and health care philanthropy) as a means of increasing awareness

  • Work with AFP Maryland roundtable chair and facilitators to identify discussion topics, dates and other logistical information
  • Communicate with AFP Maryland members and non-members about roundtable discussions and encourage them to participate
  • Encourage members of the AFP Maryland diversity committee to attend sessions and provide feedback to the larger committee or Board of Directors

Goal 4: Conduct on an annual basis, a membership analysis report that evaluates the diversity of the AFP Maryland member population

  • Work with the membership chair and other personnel to gather demographic and other informational data that provides a breakdown of the chapter membership in terms of (ethnicity, age, affinity group, location, years of experience, etc.)
