What is the CFRE Program?

The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential is the only internationally recognized certification for fundraising professionals. It demonstrates your expertise, commitment to ethical fundraising, and dedication to advancing the profession. The CFRE certification process consists of three key components:

Application: Candidates must submit a detailed application covering four areas:

  1. Professional Practice: Your work experience in fundraising.

  2. Education: Professional development and continuing education.

  3. Performance: Funds raised through your efforts.

  4. Service: Volunteer service to the fundraising profession.

Visit www.cfre.org to review eligibility requirements and start your application. Click here to view the A-Z of Becoming a CFRE presentation.

Examination: Once your application is approved, you’ll take a multiple-choice exam that assesses your knowledge in key fundraising areas:

  • Prospect Identification

  • Solicitation

  • Donor Relations

  • Volunteerism

  • Management

  • Stewardship

Recertification: To maintain your CFRE status, you must recertify every three years by updating your application with new experience, education, and service—no additional exam required!

All CFRE candidates commit to upholding the Donor Bill of Rights and adhering to a strict Code of Ethics to ensure integrity in the profession. Eligibility requirements are detailed in the CFRE Candidate Handbook which also contains an application.
