National Philanthropy Day, a program of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, pays tribute to the invaluable contributions that philanthropy has made to our personal lives, our nation, and the world. It acknowledges the entire spectrum of services provided by the nonprofit community and recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the quality of our lives and the fabric of our society.

AFP Maryland is proud to recognize the great contributions of philanthropy and those people active in the philanthropic community. Through this annual event, we encourage all people to rededicate themselves to the principle of giving. Awards are presented in the following categories:

2018 Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year and  Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of the Year

True to the meaning of philanthropy, the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year Award and the Outstanding Foundation of the Year Award both recognize the contribution of money, along with time and skill, to promote the well-being of others and the betterment of the community. Recipients and nominees of these awards exemplify the true spirit of giving. View list of past recipients

AFP Maryland is delighted to announce the selection of George and Betsy Sherman as the 2018 Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year and the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund as the 2018 Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of the Year.

James “Winky” & Florine “Peaches” Camphor were honored with the Community Impact Award. The Community Impact Award is given to those individuals, corporations or foundations that have a significant, measurable impact in the community through their philanthropy, as well as their volunteer efforts, board service and promotion of social goals. 

Outstanding Youth Fundraisers

We are delighted to announce the selection of this year's honorees for the Outstanding Youth Fundraiser Awards:

  1. Love for Lungs/ Abigail Mackenzie Plylar (Worcester Preparatory High School, Salisbury) 
  2. Arthritis Foundation/ Bede Marciari (Bryn Mawr Upper School, Baltimore) 
  3. Baltimore Ceasefire/ Gracie Pendell Jones, Ruya Erickson, and Blake Fisher (Thomas Johnson Elementary School #84, Baltimore) 

Criteria used to select the award winners include:

  1. Evidence of quality of leadership and organizational abilities
  2. Originality and creative thought of a project
  3. Evidence that funds raised from the project within Maryland benefited a non-profit organization or community, locally, nationally or internationally.

Unsung Heroes

An Unsung Hero award is the chance to publicly honor those who do so much to enhance philanthropic support in our community who may not otherwise gain recognition.  This year's honorees include:

  1. Michelle Green, BARCS
  2. Hunter McKissock, LifeBridge Health 
  3. Dan Campbell, Mission of Mercy
  4. Covenant Guild, University of Maryland Children's Hospital 
  5. Paul and Vivian Schafer, University of Maryland School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Medicine
