Reporting to the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer is responsible for raising funds from the private sector, with emphasis on corporate and university partners through sponsorships, cause-marketing, and philanthropy. This position cultivates and solicits current prospective donors, researches and acquires new donors, upgrades the level of financial support from current donors, and establishes relationships that result in long-term partnerships.


  • Plans, manages, and grows a portfolio of at least 75 corporate and university prospects, and 150 individuals and families, to reach annual agency revenue and relationship goals.
  • Solicits and stewards prospects via event sponsorship and other forms of institutional and individual giving in collaboration with staff across the agency.
  • Plans and facilitates prospect engagement events, including cultivation and volunteerism, to take place throughout the year.
  • Works closely with Board and staff on corporate and university initiatives.
  • Works closely with staff to ensure the accurate and persuasive articulation of cases for support.
  • Tracks and reports major donor, corporate and university income and expense projections.
  • Models and reinforces the Health Care for the Homeless “core values” of dignity, authenticity, hope, justice, passion and balance.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement activities and actively participates in advocacy activities that support the mission of HCH.
  • Performs other duties on an as-needed basis.



  • Bachelor’s degree


  • At least 3 years progressively responsible face-to-face fundraising or business development
  • Experience interacting and maintaining relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and business partners
  • Experience in large-scale event coordination and planning
  • Experience in prospect research
  • Strong familiarity with university and/or business networks in the Baltimore metropolitan region


  • Self-starter
  • Curious, creative, and practical problem-solver
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs and use of relational databases such as The Raiser’s Edge
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to deal tactfully with external and internal audiences
  • Strong organization and time-management skills, particularly in dealing with complex relationships, processes, and firm deadlines
  • Culturally sensitive working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Comfort working with people who are homeless and /or low income
  • Commitment to HCH values of dignity, authenticity, hope, justice, passion and balance


  • Attends meetings inside and outside the agency
  • Able to sit, stand and/or walk for lengthy periods throughout the day
  • Able to operate business machines (computers, fax machine, copier, credit card machine, etc.)
  • May be called upon to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary
