Fundamentals of Fundraising Course

The AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course is designed for fundraising professionals with 0 to 4 years of experience and those who have responsibility for the development function, such as:

  • Executive Directors
  • Development Professionals
  • Program Managers
  • Special Event Coordinators
  • Leadership Volunteers

The Fundamentals course is a two-day program. AFP offers continuing education units (CEU’s) for successful completion of the Fundamentals course.  Participants must attend all sessions on both days to receive the CEU credit.  Registration fees include complete reference workbook, continental breakfast and lunch on both days, including the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year luncheon.

Module 1: Overview of Fundraising
Presenter: Terry Weigel, Associate Director of Annual Giving,Catholic Charities of Baltimore
A big-picture look at professional fundraising, including the important role philanthropy plays in organizations and key motivations behind why people give.

9:30 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.
Module 2: Developing an Integrated Fundraising Plan (Part 1)
Presenter: Samantha Zipp-Dowd, CFRE, Director of Development, Loyola University
This module covers the importance of connecting that comprehensive plan with the organization’s overall mission and strategic plan.

Module 4: Building and Sustaining Relationships

This module will introduce the powerful role of prospect and donor research, including identifying and segmenting prospects and donors according to appropriate variables as well as effective donor records management to support ongoing relationships. support ongoing relationships.

Module 5: Securing the Gift

In this module, a closer look will be taken at solicitation strategies for campaign types, focusing most closely on solicitation techniques for annual giving.

This module will explore effective ways volunteers can be recruited, trained, managed, motivated, evaluated, and recognized.

Module 7: Management & Accountability
Presenter: Gen Haines, Director of Major & Lead Gifts, Catholic Charities of Baltimore
This module will present an overview of the management aspects of fundraising including budgeting, records management, gift processing, program evaluation, and the key roles and responsibilities of staff and volunteer leadership.
